A sepia effect gives an image warm brown tones associated with older photographs. The intensity slider controls the strength of that treatment.
Sepia Filter
Use the sepia filter online to add warm brown tones to your photo. Adjust the strength, generate the image and download a PNG, JPG or WebP.
Add a sepia filter to your photo
Use this free sepia filter to turn a color photo into a warm brown image. Choose a picture, set the intensity and apply the sepia effect, then download a static PNG, JPG or WebP.
Try the sepia photo filter on portraits, landscapes or a photograph you want to give an older look. The composition and dimensions stay the same. Keep your source for future edits.
How to use the sepia filter online
Choose one image
Select one JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP or TIFF up to 20 MB. Wait for the upload to finish before applying the filter.
Adjust the sepia tone filter
Set the intensity from 0 to 100. Choose PNG, JPG or WebP; JPG and WebP have a separate quality setting, defaulting to 90%.
Apply the sepia filter and download
Click Apply Sepia Filter, then check and download the completed sepia.png, sepia.jpg or sepia.webp.
Choose the strength of your sepia filter
Start at the default 100 and lower the strength to taste. The sepia tone filter affects the entire picture. After generation, check faces, pale clothing and bright skies.
0: keep the original colors
Set 0 to keep the original colors. Downloading still creates a newly encoded image in your chosen format.
Around 25–50: a gentler warm tint
Try this range to keep some original color visible. Lower the setting if the full brown treatment feels too strong for a portrait or landscape.
100: the full sepia effect
Use the maximum for a stronger vintage brown look. After generation, check highlights and shadows and inspect the result at its intended viewing size.
The same sepia photo filter setting can look different on light and dark images.
Sepia vs black and white
Converting a photo to sepia adds warm brown tones. Black-and-white images use neutral gray tones.
Sepia: warm brown tones
A sepia tone filter adds browns, tans and warm highlights. Partial intensity mixes some original color into the result.
Black and white: neutral gray tones
Black-and-white images use neutral grays. Apply the sepia filter to an existing grayscale photograph if you want to warm its tone.
The vintage look comes from the color treatment. Grain, scratches and a vignette are not added.
Choose PNG, JPG or WebP for your sepia photo
Choose a format before applying the sepia filter. Consider where you will use the picture; every option produces a static image.
PNG
The default PNG saves the filtered pixels with lossless compression. It cannot restore detail already lost in a JPG source.
JPG
Choose one of five quality levels from 60% to 100%; the default is 90%.
WebP
WebP offers the same quality levels. Check that your destination app or website accepts this format.
Higher quality usually produces a larger JPG or WebP. Compare detail and file size.
Image requirements and sepia filter limits
Apply the sepia filter online to one image at a time. Check the file size and dimensions before uploading.
One image, up to 20 MB
Use JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP or TIFF. Keep the file size within 20 MB and each side within 8,192 pixels.
A static result
Animations use the first frame; multipage images use the first page. The downloaded PNG, JPG or WebP is always a still image.
One strength across the image
The sepia photo filter keeps the framing and applies the selected intensity to the entire image.
Inspect the generated image before downloading. If the brown tone feels too strong, lower the intensity and generate again.
Sepia filter questions
Yes. Choose an image without an account. Selection starts the upload; Apply Sepia Filter starts processing. Download the result when it finishes.
Yes. A grayscale source can receive a warm brown tone. Start at 100 for the full effect and lower the strength for a subtler treatment.
Setting 0 keeps the colors of the file you uploaded. It cannot recover original colors from an already brown-toned photo. Use the original color image if you have it.
The controls change color and output settings. Grain, scratches, faded-paper textures and darkened corners require separate editing.
The result uses the first frame and is always a still PNG, JPG or WebP.
It must also fit 8,192 pixels per side. Small files can still have large dimensions. Damaged files or unsupported formats can also fail. Resize an oversized source and try again.
The download is a separate image; your source stays unchanged. Keep it for future edits. Encoding can change file size, even at intensity 0.
