GIF to sprite sheet: turn animation frames into one PNG

Use this online GIF to sprite sheet converter to arrange an animation’s complete frames in one transparent PNG. Choose a grid, a horizontal strip or a vertical strip, then adjust the spacing and frame scale. The result is a static image you can slice in your own project.

To turn a GIF into a sprite sheet, start with a saved GIF whose frames you want to reuse. A sprite sheet, also written spritesheet, gives each frame an equal-sized cell. The original order stays intact, including repeated frames stored in the animation.

How to convert a GIF to a sprite sheet

1

Choose and upload one GIF

Select a GIF from your device, up to 25 MB. Uploading starts when you select it. Wait for the upload to finish before creating the image.

2

Set the arrangement and frame size

Choose Grid, Horizontal strip or Vertical strip. For a grid, use Automatic or Custom columns. Adjust the spacing and scale sliders if your project needs different dimensions.

3

Create, preview and download the PNG

Select Create sprite sheet to send the conversion task to our server. When it finishes, check the preview and download the PNG. You can change the settings and convert the uploaded GIF again.

Choose a grid, horizontal strip or vertical strip

The arrangement determines the shape of the image. Choose the layout that fits your slicing workflow and its texture-size requirements.

LayoutUseful forWhat to check
GridSeveral rows of frames in one image.Automatic chooses the columns for you; Custom columns lets you set 1–240.
Horizontal stripA single row, also called a sprite strip.Long animations can produce a very wide PNG.
Vertical stripA single column of frames.Check the image height before importing it into your project.

Grid frames run left to right, then top to bottom. All layouts keep the same frame order; changing the arrangement does not remove frames.

Arrange the sprite sheet to fit your project

Automatic or custom columns

Automatic uses the frame count and dimensions to choose a grid. Select Custom columns when you need a particular number of cells per row.

For example, eight 64 × 64 frames in three columns, with 2 px spacing at 100% scale, produce a 196 × 196 PNG. One cell stays empty and transparent.

Spacing between frames

Spacing ranges from 0 to 32 pixels. The default is 0, so neighboring cells touch. A larger value adds transparent gaps between them.

The setting adds no outer margin. When slicing the PNG elsewhere, use the same gap so the selection includes each frame instead of part of its neighbor.

Frame scale from 50% to 200%

The scale slider changes each frame’s width and height. It accepts whole percentages from 50% to 200%, with 100% keeping the source dimensions.

Scaling uses nearest-neighbor resizing. It keeps hard pixel edges rather than smoothing them, but reducing the size can discard details. Enlargement cannot recreate missing detail.

What changes in a GIF to sprite sheet conversion?

GIF animations can store small changed areas instead of a full picture in every frame. This converter reconstructs complete frames before placing them in equal-sized cells. Existing transparent pixels stay transparent, and an opaque background stays part of the image.

The output contains every stored frame once, including duplicates. It has no animation playback or frame-duration data. To remove unwanted borders before conversion, use GIF Cropper, then return with the revised animation.

Use the sprite sheet in your own animation workflow

This sprite sheet generator takes a GIF as its source. Import the PNG into your editor or game engine, then configure the cell dimensions and spacing there. Check the destination’s texture limits; this tool does not export an engine-specific project or atlas file.

See MDN’s image sprite guide for CSS positioning examples. If you need a file that plays directly in a video player, use GIF to Video.

GIF and sprite sheet size limits

CheckLimit
Input fileOne GIF, up to 25 MB
Source framesUp to 240
Combined source frame pixelsUp to 60 million: width × height × frame count
PNG dimensionsUp to 8192 pixels on each side
PNG pixel countUp to 60 million: output width × output height

All limits apply together. A small GIF file can still decode into many pixels. Try a grid, adjust the columns or reduce the frame scale if the output exceeds a limit.

GIF sprite sheet questions

Yes. This sprite sheet maker accepts one GIF at a time without an account. It adds no watermark to the PNG. A watermark already visible in the source animation remains part of the picture.

The PNG is a static image containing the frames. It does not contain the GIF’s playback delays or loop setting. Set the animation timing in your own software after slicing the image.

Yes. Existing transparency stays transparent, as do gaps and unused cells. This conversion does not remove an opaque background. Check the edges in the preview, especially when your animation will appear on another background.

A grid needs complete rows of equally sized cells. If the frame count does not fill the last row, those positions stay transparent. They are empty space, not extra frames to include in playback.

The converter keeps every frame stored in the GIF and does not deduplicate them. Repeated images may be part of the source animation. The number of cells with content follows the stored frame count.

This page combines the frames into one PNG. For a numbered sequence of individual images in a ZIP, use GIF Frame Extractor. That output suits editing each frame separately.

Use it as a source image in a workflow that supports regular-grid slicing. Configure cell size, spacing and playback yourself. The download contains the PNG only, so check the import settings required by your engine or code.

GIF and PNG encode the images differently, and the output includes every complete frame on one canvas. Transparent gaps and unused cells also increase its dimensions. A smaller scale can reduce dimensions, but a smaller file is not guaranteed.
