Fade Image

This free image fader makes the whole picture semi-transparent. Adjust opacity from 0–100%, keep existing transparent areas and download a PNG.

Supports JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, TIFF and HEIC/HEIF. One image up to 20 MB. Animated or multi-page images use the first frame/page.

How to fade a picture online

1

Upload your image

Choose one image from your device. Selection starts the upload; wait for it to finish before applying the effect.

2

Set image opacity

Move the slider between 0% and 100%. The default is 50%; lower values make the image more transparent.

3

Apply the fade

Click Fade image to create a task. The server processes the uploaded file with your chosen setting.

4

Preview and download the PNG

Inspect the completed image over the checkerboard, then download it. The transparency is saved in the PNG file.

What the image opacity setting changes

The image fader adjusts opacity across the whole image. A low value lets more of the background behind the image show through; a high value keeps more of the uploaded image visible.

The slider scales the opacity already present in each pixel. The examples below compare an opaque source with a pixel that is already 50% opaque.

0%

25%

100%

These percentages illustrate the effect. Saving the PNG may round opacity values slightly. A fully transparent source pixel stays transparent at every setting.

Image opacity editor with transparent PNG output

This image opacity editor exports a static PNG so the downloaded file can keep its transparency. The W3C PNG specification describes how an alpha channel stores each pixel’s opacity. JPG and JPEG inputs become PNG because JPEG cannot store transparency.

An uploaded PNG stays in PNG format but is re-encoded with the chosen opacity. The tool applies the file’s stored orientation and keeps the resulting pixel dimensions. Changing opacity does not resize the picture.

How does opacity differ from brightness and background removal?

Image opacity controls how much of the background shows through. A semi-transparent PNG can look pale on white and darker on a dark background. Fading does not brighten the picture itself. To increase brightness while keeping the image opaque, use Image Brightener.

Changing PNG opacity affects the subject and background together. To remove a background while keeping the subject visible, use Transparent Background Maker.

Image fader FAQ

Upload one image up to 20 MB. Supported inputs include JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, TIFF and HEIC/HEIF. Every completed task produces one PNG file.

The tool processes only the first frame or page and exports a static PNG. An animated GIF does not remain animated, and a multi-page TIFF does not produce a PNG for each page.

The slider adjusts opacity across the entire image. Directional gradients, edge fades and local masks are outside this tool’s current controls.

The output is re-encoded as PNG with transparency. Depending on the image, this can take more space than the source JPG, WebP or AVIF. For a separate file-size reduction step, use Image Compressor.

Keep the original upload in the form, move the slider and apply again. Each new task starts from that uploaded file. If you upload a faded download as a new source, its remaining opacity is reduced again.

The checkerboard is only the preview background. The PNG contains the edited image and its transparency. Other viewers may display a solid colour behind transparent pixels, so its appearance can vary with the viewer’s background.
