How to change image DPI online

1

Upload an image

Choose one supported still image. Upload starts when you select it; processing runs on the server.

2

Enter the target DPI

Leave the value at 300 or enter the DPI you need.

3

Apply the DPI change

Click Change DPI and wait for the task to finish.

4

Download the updated image

Use the download button in the results section.

DPI and print size with the same pixels

For software that uses the file’s density value, print size in inches equals pixels divided by DPI. This example keeps a portrait image at 2400 × 3000 pixels throughout.

72

Print size in inches
About 33.33 × 41.67 in
Print size in centimeters
About 84.67 × 105.83 cm

150

Print size in inches
16 × 20 in
Print size in centimeters
40.64 × 50.8 cm

300

Print size in inches
8 × 10 in
Print size in centimeters
20.32 × 25.4 cm

600

Print size in inches
4 × 5 in
Print size in centimeters
10.16 × 12.7 cm

These are sizes implied by the metadata. A print application can override them with its layout or fit-to-page settings.

Convert JPG, PNG or TIFF to 300 DPI

JPG and JPEG: 72 DPI to 300 DPI

To convert a JPG to 300 DPI, upload the image, leave the target DPI at 300 and apply the change. The same steps work for a 72 DPI JPG. The tool updates density metadata without another round of lossy encoding.

JPG and JPEG are the same image format. Both .jpg and .jpeg inputs download with a .jpg extension, retaining the original compressed picture data.

300 DPI PNG with transparency

To make a 300 DPI PNG, upload a still PNG and keep the target value at 300. The output remains PNG with its existing transparent areas.

PNG records physical pixel density in whole pixels per meter; BMP uses this unit too. A setting of 300 DPI corresponds to about 11811 pixels per meter, so an image editor may show that value in the file properties.

Change TIFF DPI

To change TIFF DPI, upload a single-page .tif or .tiff and enter 300, 600 or another supported value. This TIFF DPI converter updates horizontal and vertical resolution tags while retaining the original compression and image data.

TIFF results appear as downloadable files on this page. Open the downloaded image in a TIFF-compatible editor to read the saved resolution. Multi-page TIFF files are not supported.

Increase image DPI while keeping pixel dimensions

Increasing DPI places the same pixels into a smaller implied print area. It does not restore missing detail or make a blurry photograph sharp. To change the actual pixel width and height, use Image Resizer; resizing is a separate operation.

Digital image density is measured in pixels per inch, or PPI, although upload requirements often call it DPI. A printer’s dots-per-inch specification describes its physical output. See Adobe’s printed-resolution guide for the relationship between pixels and print size.

DPI converter FAQ

One still JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, BMP, AVIF or HEIC/HEIF up to 20 MB and 40 million pixels. BMP supports common Windows bitmap files, with up to 8192 pixels per side. Animated and multi-page images are not supported.

Enter a whole number from 1 to 65535; the default is 300. The same value is used for horizontal and vertical density.

A screen preview can look identical because only the density tag changed. TIFF and HEIC/HEIF results are listed as downloadable files.

Adding or updating density metadata can change the file’s byte count. The encoded picture data is retained.

Check the downloaded file’s horizontal and vertical resolution in a compatible editor. The EXIF viewer can read TIFF and other supported formats.

An editor or upload service may replace or remove density metadata when saving the image. Recheck the final file after those changes.
