PNG does not add further lossy JPEG compression, but it cannot restore detail that was already lost. Changing formats also cannot recover transparency that has already been replaced with a solid background.
Image Converter
Convert an image to JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or ICO with this free online image converter. Choose an output format, adjust the available settings and download your converted file. No account is required. You can switch formats while continuing to use the same original upload.
Choose the Right Image Format
Start with the requirements of the website, application or document where you will use the image. The best choice depends on whether you need compatibility, transparency, a smaller file or an icon.
JPG / JPEG
- When to choose it
- HEIC to JPG for photographs, or PNG to JPG and WebP to JPG when an upload form requires JPEG.
- What to expect
- Lossy compression with adjustable quality. Transparent areas become white.
PNG
- When to choose it
- WebP to PNG for screenshots or graphics with existing transparency, or SVG to PNG when a pixel image is required.
- What to expect
- Lossless image encoding. Compression settings affect file size and processing effort, rather than image quality.
WebP
- When to choose it
- JPG to WebP or PNG to WebP for website images when the destination accepts WebP.
- What to expect
- Lossy or lossless encoding, with support for existing transparency.
AVIF
- When to choose it
- JPG to AVIF or PNG to AVIF for websites and applications that accept AVIF.
- What to expect
- Lossy or lossless encoding. Compare the result and check destination compatibility.
ICO
- When to choose it
- PNG to ICO or JPG to ICO for icons that need one or more standard square sizes.
- What to expect
- A ZIP containing individual ICO files and a combined favicon.ico.
| Output | When to choose it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| JPG / JPEG | HEIC to JPG for photographs, or PNG to JPG and WebP to JPG when an upload form requires JPEG. | Lossy compression with adjustable quality. Transparent areas become white. |
| PNG | WebP to PNG for screenshots or graphics with existing transparency, or SVG to PNG when a pixel image is required. | Lossless image encoding. Compression settings affect file size and processing effort, rather than image quality. |
| WebP | JPG to WebP or PNG to WebP for website images when the destination accepts WebP. | Lossy or lossless encoding, with support for existing transparency. |
| AVIF | JPG to AVIF or PNG to AVIF for websites and applications that accept AVIF. | Lossy or lossless encoding. Compare the result and check destination compatibility. |
| ICO | PNG to ICO or JPG to ICO for icons that need one or more standard square sizes. | A ZIP containing individual ICO files and a combined favicon.ico. |
JPG and JPEG are two extensions for the same format. Choosing .jpeg instead of .jpg changes the filename extension, not the encoding quality.
How to Convert an Image Online
Upload your original image
Choose or drop one supported image, up to 20 MB. Upload starts when you select the file. Wait for it to finish before converting.
Select an output and adjust its settings
Choose an available output format. Leave dimensions blank to keep the original size, or enter the dimensions you need. Depending on the format, you can adjust quality, compression mode or icon sizes.
Convert, review and download
Click Convert and wait for server processing to finish. Download the result and check its appearance, dimensions and file size. For another comparison, change the settings and convert from the original upload again.
Adjust Dimensions and Compression
Image dimensions and compression solve different problems. Dimensions control the number of pixels; compression controls how those pixels are encoded. Lossless encoding cannot undo changes already present in the source, and resizing still changes the image’s pixels.
Width and height left blank
Keep the original dimensions.
One dimension entered
Calculate the other dimension proportionally.
Both dimensions entered
Fit the image inside that bounding box while preserving its proportions.
JPG quality
The quality setting ranges from 1 to 100. A higher value can retain more detail, but even quality 100 uses lossy JPEG encoding.
PNG compression
Compression levels change encoding effort and file size. They do not act as a quality slider.
WebP compression mode
WebP offers separate lossy and lossless modes.
AVIF compression mode
AVIF offers separate lossy and lossless modes.
ICO sizes
Choose from 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel sizes. The default selection is 32, 64 and 128.

For example, a 1200 × 800 image fitted inside 600 × 600 becomes 600 × 400. It is not stretched into a square. Use Image Cropper when you need a different composition.
Supported Files and Conversion Behavior
The image format converter accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, TIFF, HEIC/HEIF, BMP and SVG files. Supported variants include APNG, JFIF, JPE and compressed SVG files.
These inputs can be converted to JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. ICO output is available for JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP inputs. The available output choices update after the uploaded file is identified.
Some properties change during conversion:
Transparency
PNG, WebP and AVIF can retain existing transparency. JPG fills transparent areas with white. Converting to PNG does not automatically remove a background.
Animation and multiple pages
GIF and animated WebP use the first frame; TIFF uses the first page. APNG uses its default static image. Animation and additional pages are not preserved.
Vector graphics
SVG and compressed SVG files are rendered into pixels. The downloaded image is not an editable vector.
Icons
Rectangular images are fitted proportionally inside square ICO canvases with transparent padding. The ZIP includes each selected size and a favicon.ico containing all selected sizes.
BMP source dimensions must not exceed 8192 pixels on either side. Other dimension restrictions depend on the output format and are shown alongside its controls.
Check the Result Before You Use It
Photographs for JPG-only uploads
For a photograph going into a JPG-only form, check faces, gradients and the destination’s file-size limit.
Screenshots and diagrams
For a screenshot or diagram, inspect small text and thin lines. Strong lossy compression can make these details harder to read.
Transparent logos
For a transparent logo, check its edges against the background where it will appear. A JPG copy will include a white background, while a narrow logo may become difficult to recognize at small ICO sizes.
Keep the original file so you can make future versions from the best available source.
Image Converter Questions
File size depends on the source, dimensions, output format and encoding settings. A lossless PNG can be larger than a compressed JPEG. Compare actual downloads; changing formats does not guarantee a smaller file or a particular number of KB.
This page processes one image per submission. Convert additional files separately. If you need to combine several images into a document, use Image to PDF.
Browser preview support and server conversion support are different. A file may still be recognized and converted even when the browser cannot display its preview.
Files upload when selected and are processed on the server. Uploads and converted results are temporary, so download the results you need promptly. Source-file metadata is not preserved in the output.
